Downtown Detroit Security Officers, Joined By Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris, Call On Bedrock to Create Good Union Jobs
DETROIT – On Wednesday, July 24, downtown Detroit security officers, joined by United States Senator and 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris, continued to fight for the union rights, affordable healthcare and more they need to support their families and strengthen Detroit’s neighborhoods that have been left behind amid downtown’s resurgence. The security officers were also joined by SEIU Local 1 janitors and Detroit-area elected leaders including Councilwoman Janeé Ayers and Wayne County Commissioner Alisha Bell.
“Companies like Bedrock have a responsibility to create good jobs in Detroit where workers have a voice in the workplace,” said SecurAmerica Security Officer Mattie Hunter, who secures the First National building. “We need union rights, with benefits such as affordable, quality healthcare to protect ourselves and create a better life for our families.”
"I have fought with organized labor throughout my career and I'm proud to stand in solidarity with the security officers here today fighting for their right to unionize and bargain for the protections and benefits they deserve," said Senator Kamala Harris. "Unions built the middle class, and we must hold corporations accountable to give every worker a voice and fair treatment.
"SecurAmerica security officers protect downtown Detroit’s Bedrock properties such as One Campus Martius, One Woodward and First National and are the first responders in many dangerous situations, playing a key role in Detroit’s comeback. At the same time, without a voice on the job or quality, affordable healthcare, these same officers are struggling to enjoy the city’s redevelopment, often relying on public assistance to make ends meet and lacking the equipment and training that they need to do their jobs to the best of their ability.
Senator Harris, SEIU Local 1 janitors, elected leaders and other labor allies gathered at Hart Plaza to support security officers in the One Detroit fight. They called on SecurAmerica and local officials to allow these security officers a fast and fair process to come together in the workplace without interference. Together, they’re continuing the fight for One Detroit, a city in which all working people can thrive and provide a better life for their families.
