Representing nearly 4,000 SEIU members in St. Louis City...Frontline essential janitors, healthcare workers back Tishaura Jones in first major public labor endorsement of the race

ST. LOUIS – Today, frontline essential janitors, nursing home, and home care workers of the SEIU Missouri/Kansas State Council announced their endorsement of Treasurer Tishaura Jones for Mayor of St. Louis. From leading in the fight for a $15 minimum wage to supporting the effort to close the workhouse, St. Louis working families can trust Tishaura Jones to fight for them, not billionaires and special interests.

“Frontline essential workers trust Tishaura Jones to lead our city forward,” said Keyahnna Jackson, an SEIU Local 1 housekeeper at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. “When janitors marched through the streets to fight for a strong new contract and a $15 wage, she marched alongside us because she understands how higher pay strengthens neighborhoods across St. Louis. As a resident of South City, I say yes to Tishaura Jones for mayor because I know she stands with working people in our fight for a better future for all St. Louis residents.”

While wealthy special interests try to divide working people for their own profit, Tishaura Jones will bring St. Louis working families together around an equitable vision for the city, across zip codes and racial lines. As Treasurer, Tishaura Jones raised pay in the office to $15 an hour and supported working people across the region when they fought for the same. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, she took action alongside frontline essential workers to demand guaranteed PPE, job protections and more.

"I have watched my coworkers get infected with COVID while nursing home owners and leaders in this city have made what we do political," said Lavetta Richardson, a CNA and SEIU Healthcare member at Mary, Queen and Mother. "We don't need politics. We need someone who will stand with the working people of this city. Someone who will fight for what we need to keep battling COVID and to help us create lives where we can thrive. That person is Tishaura Jones."

“I am incredibly grateful to the hardworking members of SEIU Missouri/ Kansas State Council for their endorsement,” said Treasurer Tishaura Jones. “I will always stand with you, and I am glad that you have chosen to stand with me.”

As leaders in their communities, SEIU members are ready to get out the vote for Tishaura Jones ahead of the March 2 non-partisan primary election. The SEIU Missouri/Kansas State Council represents 14,000 members including front-line essential janitors, hospital workers, nursing home workers and others, with more than 4,000 members living in St. Louis City.
