SEIU Local 1 Essential Workers Celebrate $15 Minimum Wage Increase In Chicago

CHICAGO – After years of campaigning, essential workers across Chicago will see a huge win when today, July 1, the city’s new $15 minimum wage will go into full effect. This is an exciting victory for working families in Chicago - one that Local 1 members fought tirelessly for.

The following statement is from SEIU Local 1 President Tom Balanoff regarding the minimum wage increase:

“This past year, essential workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic have stepped up to keep our communities safe and healthy - while still struggling to provide for their families.

“Many of them struggle to make ends meet on the wage they are being paid, often working multiple jobs and long hours to survive. The $15 an hour rate gives working families the ability to sustain themselves.

“However, let’s be clear: a $15 minimum wage is the floor, not the ceiling. SEIU members will not stop until every working person has access to higher wages and a voice on the job."
