Local 1 Airport Workers Historic Victory!

SEIU Local 1 is pleased to announce that the Chicago City Council unanimously passed our airport ordinance that will substantially increase the minimum wage for thousands of airport workers at O'Hare and Midway.

Last year, Local 1 members eliminated the tipped wage for wheelchair pushers increasing their hourly wages by $3.00-$5.00/hour. This was implemented on July 1, 2021.

Even with last year's win, the cost of living and inflation have increased dramatically and airport workers’ current wages are not liveable.

With the fear of airlines rolling back wages, the new minimum wage scale will provide safeguards to thousands of essential Chicago workers who risked their health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is a historic victory for airport workers and will set the stage for airports across the country!

Executive Vice President Genie Kastrup and Local 1 airport workers, Michael Ortiz and Cierra Swain, meet with Mayor Lori Lightfoot following the ordinance passage.
