Security on the Move: Meet Charlotte

The “Security On The Move...” campaign is in full gear with many large security contracts up in 2022. Each month, we will include a special Q&A interview with security officers who are movers at their workplace and making a difference. This month we’re featuring Charlotte Walker.

Charlotte has been a security officer for 10 years, and has been a Local 1 member for five years. She and her co-workers are fighting for a strong new Metro contract.

What inspired you to first become a security officer?

Ten years ago when I decided to become a security officer, my husband had just passed away and I became a single mom with two kids. I needed to support my kids. I went to Daley Plaza, found this job and only planned to be here temporarily. However, “temporary” turned into ten years. It was a really dark time in my life, but this helped me get out of that slump. I love the work I do, I love the people I get to interact with daily, and I love my coworkers. That is why I keep coming back.

Why did you decide to get involved in the union?

Five or so years ago, I had an issue on the job. I didn’t know what to do, I wasn’t really actively involved in the union, so I didn’t really know who to go to. But through filing this grievance, my union representative educated me and helped me understand my rights on the job. It changed the way I looked at this work. I was so encouraged that I wanted to be able to create change for my coworkers. I didn’t want to make a change just for the future, I wanted to make a difference for TODAY!

What would you like to tell your fellow security officers?

We need to unite as one and fight for a contract that benefits all of us, and our families - one that provides us with higher wages, affordable healthcare, and benefits that allow us to save for the future.  Right now, we are at the bottom. The cost of living has gone up and it is time that our pay reflects that increase. If we sit back and do nothing, we will suffer in the long run. But this only happens - and we only make meaningful change - if we come together as one! If you want to win a strong, new contract in September, join us at the kick-off campaign on July 20. This is your time to make your voice heard!
