SEIU Local 1 Endorses Brandon Johnson for Mayor of Chicago

CHICAGO- Earlier today, SEIU Local 1 endorsed progressive leader Brandon Johnson for Mayor of Chicago. SEIU Local 1 – representing more than 45,000 workers throughout the Midwest– supports candidates who strongly commit to fighting for economic, racial, immigrant, LGBTQ+, and environmental justice for Chicago’s working families.

“In such a critical race for working families across Chicago, Local 1 is proud to endorse Brandon Johnson for Mayor of Chicago,” said SEIU Local 1 President Genie Kastrup. “SEIU Local 1 is a diverse union with members from all different backgrounds - a third being Latinx, a third African American, and a third White-ethnic - a true reflection of Chicago. We need a Mayor who will fight for all of us and Brandon will do just that. Brandon is an organizer, a teacher, a county commissioner, and a longtime community leader that will unite a multi-racial working class in order to build a Chicago that works for all of us. His vision for Chicago is one that ensures every working family – regardless of zip code or race – has access to affordable healthcare, a liveable wage, quality education, and safe communities to raise our children.”

“Local 1 is more than just a union; it’s an organization at the forefront of improving the lives of working people by fighting for economic, racial and environmental justice in all aspects of life,” Commissioner Johnson said. “And its members are people whose livelihoods are centered around helping others, so we must protect and uplift them with the same urgency by upholding workers’ rights, fighting for fair wages, and ensuring workers are safe and supported on the job. I am honored to receive this endorsement, and the full strength of the 45,000 working people SEIU Local 1 represents.”
