SEIU Local 1 Continues Commitment to Downtown Chicago by Moving Office Headquarters to Aon Center – Lease Signed, Projected Move for December 2024
The labor union represents thousands of members servicing the skyline including commercial janitors, security officers, residential door staff, building engineers, window washers and more; Local 1 is set to occupy 20,073 RSF in the East Loop
Chicago, IL – Aon Center welcomes Service Employees International Union Local 1 (SEIU) to their list of tenants. The labor union organization will occupy 20,073 rental square footage (RSF) in a long-term lease on the 15th floor in the iconic East Loop trophy building. SEIU Local 1 has a long-standing history and commitment to downtown Chicago, where the labor union got its start in 1921. Local 1 was the first local union of the 2.1 million member union, Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Servicing the skyline for over 100 years, Local 1 is committed to reimagining downtown Chicago in a post-pandemic world and in doing so, will join established tenants of Aon Center such as Kraft Heinz, Microsoft, KPMG, JLL, AON, and more.
SEIU Local 1 unites 50,000 working people across the Midwest – including 30,000 throughout Chicagoland – and has fought to raise and maintain high labor standards for Property Service Workers. Downtown Chicago is the heart of the City — the center for public transportation, tourist attractions, businesses, home to nearly 250,000 Chicagoans and the workplace for thousands of working women and men of SEIU Local 1. The move to Aon will allow SEIU Local 1 to remain accessible to union members who service the entire skyline and who play essential roles in the tenant and visitor experience in both commercial offices and residential buildings.
“We are excited to welcome SEIU to Aon Center in the heart of the East Loop. Aon Center sets the standard for tenant experience,” said Jeff Dowdell of The Telos Group, LLC. “With over a million square feet leased at Aon Center in the past year, we’re excited to welcome another exceptional tenant to our roster.”
“SEIU Local 1 is excited to continue to invest in downtown Chicago not only through our exceptional workforce that services the skyline but also through this collaborative effort with the Aon Center to provide a high-quality commercial office space,” said SEIU Local 1 President Genie Kastrup. “Our strong partnership with key leaders in the commercial and residential industries along with the essential services provided by Local 1 members make Local 1 working people a key part of the solution to a reimagined downtown in a post-COVID world. Local 1 aims to reimagine the future of downtown Chicago and do our part in creating vitality street by street, building by building – this exciting move to the Aon Center is one of those steps.”
Aon Center, owned by 601W Companies, is the fourth tallest building in Chicago’s skyline and serves as the crown jewel of the East Loop. Originally built in 1973, Aon Center has unveiled exciting updates in the past five years, with its new plaza, highest amenity floor in the city, and, most recently, newly restructured financing. In addition to offering tenants a compelling office experience, Aon Center is steps away from Lake Michigan, Millennium Park, and Michigan Avenue.
Jeff Dowdell and Jamey Dix of The Telos Group, LLC, as well as Isabella Spinnell of JLL represented ownership in the transaction. Jake Ehrenberg of JLL represented SEIU Local 1.
