CHICAGO – The following is a statement from SEIU Local 1 President Tom Balanoff regarding Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ victory in the 2020 presidential election:

“Essential workers across the country are on the front lines of this pandemic, working hard to keep the public safe, healthy and clean. This year, essential workers voted for racial justice rooted in our communities, a $15 wage, immediate action on climate change and the critical protections from COVID-19 the Trump administration and Republican allies have refused to provide.

“For the past 9 months, essential workers have told their stories and made their message clear: Respect us, protect us and pay us. This year, janitors, security officers, residential workers and more turned out in record numbers and worked hard to elect Joe Biden as president of the United States.

“Working people united – across racial lines and different backgrounds – to forge a new direction for our country. Together, we are ready to continue the fight for a democracy and an economy that works for all.”
