SEIU Illinois State Council President Tom Balanoff Applauds Signing of Historic $15 Minimum Wage Law
State becomes first in the Midwest to pass a $15 minimum wage law
CHICAGO - The following is a statement from SEIU Illinois State Council President Tom Balanoff regarding the signing of SB01, which will raise Illinois’ minimum wage to $15 by 2025, lifting wages for more than 1.4 million Illinois workers:
“Today, Illinois became the first state in the Midwest to enact a $15 minimum wage law, lifting pay for more than 1.4 million working families. This victory belongs to the thousands of fearless fast food workers, hospital workers, airport workers, janitors, homecare and childcare workers and more who came together to make a $15 wage for our state a moral necessity.
"The 150,000 janitors, security officers, healthcare workers, public employees and more of the SEIU Illinois State Council applaud Governor JB Pritzker for acting swiftly and decisively on his campaign pledge to raise wages for the working families of our state.
"But the Fight for $15 isn’t just about pay. Fast food workers, hospital workers and more will continue to come together across our state for the good union jobs and financial security communities across our state need to thrive."
