SEIU Illinois State Council Celebrates Marie Newman’s Victory in Nationally Watched Contest

Newman made $15 minimum wage, immigration reform, healthcare for all foundation of her campaign

CHICAGO – The following is a statement from SEIU Illinois State Council President Tom Balanoff regarding Marie Newman’s victory in Illinois' 3rd Congressional District Democratic Primary:

“Today, voters across Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District chose Marie Newman to be their Democratic nominee in the general election.“The janitors, home care and health care providers, adjunct faculty, security officers, residential workers and more of SEIU look forward to fighting alongside Marie Newman for a national $15 minimum wage, comprehensive immigration reform and more.“

Newman’s upset over an entrenched conservative incumbent sends a signal to Democrats: Embrace the grassroots energy mobilizing the country and offer forward-thinking policies that will help working families.“Newman’s victory shows that the labor movement cannot win justice for working families if we leave working women, LGBTQ workers and immigrant workers behind.”
